Before You Begin:
Stains caused by tar and similar substances as road oil, axle grease, asphalt, and pitch are similar and certain solvents are effective for them all. However, they are not easily removed, especially from cotton or other natural fabrics.
When wiping use a light, upward, brushing motion so that the stain will be rubbed out of the rug rather than into it. Change your cloth when it becomes soiled and continue until the stain is gone.

Ballpoint Ink: Rubbing alcohol works well. Test for color fastness in an inconspicuous area first.
Beer - Stain Removal on Carpet and Upholstery
Mix one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches) with a cup of lukewarm water. Blot.
Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water. Blot on stain.
Sponge and blot with water.
Blood
Mix one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches) to a cup of lukewarm water. Blot.
Mix one tablespoon of household ammonia with a half-cup of water. Blot.
Sponge with clean water. Blot.
Candle Wax
Use an iron over a paper towel or towel to draw the wax to the towel.
Use a towel or sponge with warm water and a mild detergent to blot stain away.
Cheese
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix a small amount of ammonia with one cup water and blot.
Repeat with detergent. Blot.
Wipe with warm water.
Chocolate
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix small amount of vinegar with one cup water and blot.
Repeat with detergent. Blot.
Wipe with warm water.
Cola
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix small amount of vinegar with one cup water and blot.
Wipe up with warm water.
Catsup
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix small amount of ammonia with one cup water and blot.
Wipe up with warm water.
Egg
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix small amount of ammonia with one cup water and blot.
Repeat with detergent. Blot
Wipe up with warm water.
Furniture Polish
Use a dry cleaning solvent. Blot (No gas, lighter fluid, etc.)
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Wipe up with warm water.
Glue
Mix small amount of detergent (no bleach) with water and blot.
Mix small amount of ammonia with one cup water and blot.
Wipe up with warm water.
Gravy

Use a dry cleaning solvent. Blot (No gas, lighter fluid, etc.)
